At the completion of my spring semester in 2021 I was hired to paint a mural on a shipping container. The container serves as both a storage device and meeting place for a surf school called "Surf2Live". I had been working for Surf2Live as an independent contractor for several years teaching surfing lessons prior to the arrival of this new container. When the owner and manager decided to choose an artist to design a mural for this new container, I was ready to seize the opportunity.
As I worked on this first project, I gained the attention of a neighboring business owner who operated a concession stand at the same beach where the surf school is located. His initial request was for a mural to beautify the steel roll-down door on the street-facing wall of the concession stand. I was quickly hired to paint the entire exterior including an "instagram- friendly" painting on the beach facing wall of the building in the area where patrons wait for their food. I chose to create an arch of seashells to satisfy this request.
For each painting I used Benjamin Moore exterior paint. When I got final approval of the completed jobs I used transparent spray-adhesive to seal uneven surfaces and places that might see excessive wear.
